New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie will be the next featured speaker in the Business Council of Westchester’s political leadership series.
Heastie is the first African-American to serve as Speaker.
Assembly members elected him to the top position in 2015, following the resignation of Sheldon Silver, who held the position for 21 years. Silver had been arrested on federal corruption charges and has since been convicted and sentenced to prison.
Heastie, a Democrat, was elected to the Assembly in 2000 to represent the northeast Bronx. He has advocated for new schools and increasing the minimum wage.
The BCW event will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 21, from 8 to 9:30 a.m., at the organization”™s auditorium at 800 Westchester Ave., Rye Brook. Admission is $30 for members and $40 for nonmembers and includes a continental breakfast.
