The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. LLC recently announced it will close the current A&P store at 195 N. Bedford Ave. in Mount Kisco on Nov. 13 and re-open the location as a Stop & Shop store Nov. 19.
Stop & Shop, which operates a regional office in Purchase, bought 25 former A & P, Pathmark and Waldbaums stores throughout the New York metropolitan area for $146 million after The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company declared bankruptcy in July. The Mt. Kisco store, A&P’s most profitable Westchester location, was Stop & Shop’s sole Westchester acquisition.
The Massachusetts-based Stop & Shop chain, owned by Dutch retailer Ahold, broke the conversions of former A&P stores into five waves; the Mt. Kisco location is part of the final wave, which also includes stores in Queens, Staten Island and Long Island. Each new Stop & Shop store will include updated decor, lighting, refrigeration, technology and other aesthetic improvements. Pharmacies and banks within the stores will remain open during renovations.
Stop & Shop New York Metro Division President Don Sussman said Wednesday that, despite the rapid turnover, all store conversions were expected to be completed by the holiday season.
“We”™ve completed the conversion process of more than half of the 25 newly acquired A&P stores to Stop & Shop stores,” Sussman said. “This has been a monumental task for all those involved.”
Other former A&P stores in Westchester were acquired by Pennsylvania-based Acme Markets Inc.; Staten Island-based Key Food Stores Co-operative Inc.; CVS Pharmacy; Mount Vernon-based PSK Supermarkets Inc.; CW A&P Mamaroneck LLC; and Queens-based LLC Shanghai Enterprises.
