The “Super Bowl” ad for White Plains-based Heineken USA”™s Newcastle Brown Ale starring actress Anna Kendrick didn”™t go as planned ”“ the hypothetical ad was never actually produced, but frequently referenced in the online ad campaign for the English beer that came out around the time of last year’s big game.
“I was really excited to make a S(bleep) B(bleep) commercial with Newcastle,” Kendrick said deadpan into the camera in a two-minute advertisement that references the never-made Super Bowl ad. “Turns out, they don”™t have the money or permission to make a S(bleep) B(bleep) commercial. They can”™t even say S(bleep) B(bleep).”
Critics found the ad, which joked at the idea of Newcastle not being able to afford to produce a Super Bowl ad, to be a great concept, and Ad Week named the campaign, titled “If We Made It,” the top advertising campaign of 2014.
The Web video is a two-minute riff on topics from advertising to Kendrick’s own looks and career goals while she has her hair styled. It garnered more than 1 million impressions and was the top trending item on Facebook for two days after it first ran.
Other ads from the campaign include the ludicrous plot and hand-drawn storyboards for the unmade advertisement, an interview with former New York Jets receiver Keyshawn Johnson about his cameo in the not-produced spot, and  focus group reactions to the ad’s concept. All of these spots, as well as the one featuring Anna Kendrick, can be viewed at ifwemadeit.com.
Heineken USA Inc. is a subsidiary of Heineken International BV. The company imports Heineken, Strongbow, Desperados, Amstel Light and Newcastle Brown Ale from Europe, and the Dos Equis, Tecate, Sol, Indio, Carta Blanca and Bohemia brands from Mexico.
