Hospice & Palliative Care hosts gala
Hospice & Palliative Care of Westchester (HPCW) recently hosted its 12th Annual Gala Cocktail Reception, In Celebration, at Westchester Country Club in Rye.
This year”™s gala honored Mae Carpenter, commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services, and Kenneth J. Doka, professor of gerontology at the Graduate School of The College of New Rochelle and senior consultant to the Hospice Foundation of America for their continued dedication and commitment to HPCW. The event also paid tribute to Anna L. Shereff for her steadfast support of HPCW”™s Anna & Louis H. Shereff Caregiver and Complementary Care Programs.
Grand sponsor of the event was Anna L. Shereff, and sponsors included Amoruso & Amoruso L.L.P.; The Hildegarde D. New head at philharmonic
MILLICENT L. KAUFMAN of Scarsdale, has been elected chairman of the board of directors of the Westchester Philharmonic. Kaufman, a member of the board for 11 years and its former president from 2003 to 2006, succeeds Neil D. Aaron, who will continue on the board”™s executive committee. The longtime Scarsdale resident and community leader was elected unanimously at a recent meeting of the board directors.
“Being an integral part of the leadership team of the Westchester Philharmonic for more than a decade is a great honor. I look forward to working with my dedicated fellow board members, our hard-working staff and all of our friends and patrons in the community in support of this incredible orchestra, which is such an indispensible aspect of our cultural life,” Kaufman said.
Kaufman is president and owner of KL Travel Inc. in Scarsdale. She has been in the business for more than 25 years.
A graduate of Hunter College High School in New York City and the University of California at Berkeley, Kaufman holds a master”™s degree from Columbia University.
Sound Shore medical residents to present at symposium
STEPHEN JESMAJIAN, SOUND SHORE MEDICAL CENTER (SSMC) director of medicine and director of internal medicine residency program recently announced that 13 scientific abstracts submitted by SSMC medical residents have been peer-selected for presentations at the American Medical Association”™s 11th Annual Research Symposium. Of these, four are among a select number honored with an invitation to participate in the oral presentation competition. The symposium, “Will today”™s research be tomorrow”™s medicine” is scheduled for Nov. 15-16, at National Harbor, Maryland.
“A community hospital receiving 13 invitations to a single scientific symposium is exceptional and speaks to the quality of our program, its teaching staff and our residents,” Jesmajian said.
Lawmaker recognized for environmental votes
NEW YORK STATE ASSEMBLYMAN DAVID BUCHWALD received a perfect legislative score from the Environmental Advocates of New York (EANY), a leading environmental watchdog group in the state.
“I am honored by this recognition from the Environmental Advocates of New York, but the fight for good environmental policy is far from over,” said Buchwald. “As the frequency of extreme weather events ”“ like those we”™ve seen here in New York and across the globe ”“ increase and nonrenewable energy costs rise, the need for environmentally responsible legislation has never been more urgent. We are facing new challenges every day and we need to continue to pass legislation that protects our local communities and keeps our environment vibrant.”
Every year, Environmental Advocates of New York grades New York State lawmakers according to their votes on bills that could help or harm our air, land, water, wildlife and health. Based in Albany, the group monitors state government, evaluates proposed laws and champions policies and practices that ensure the responsible stewardship of our shared environment.

Surgeons join HVHC
SEVEN NEW SURGEONS have joined the Hudson Valley Hospital Center”™s staff as part of an expansion of surgical services at the hospital”™s state-of-the-art surgery center.
The doctors include thoracic surgeons CYNTHIA CHIN, SCOTT BERMAN, TODD WEISER and ROBERT STREISAND; hand surgeon ARI MAYERFIELD; foot and ankle orthopedic surgeon KATHLEEN MA and breast surgeon MELITA CHARLES, the newest member of the Ashikari Breast Center.
“The combined experience and talents of these new members of our team add to the outstanding expertise of our existing staff and will give our institution a competitive advantage in serving the needs of our community and doctors,” said Dr. William Higgins, vice president of medical affairs at the hospital.
