Since launching its BGreen2020 initiative and partnering with Recyclebank, the city of Bridgeport has increased its recycling rate by 67 percent.
Armed with new recycling bins and reward programs, residents are recycling more and at a higher rate. As a result, the city has saved nearly $400,000 in avoided fees and new revenue.
Recyclebank has helped the city achieve a higher recycling rate by rewarding residents points for frequent recycling. Since 2011, the program awarded more than $47,000 worth of points, redeemable at stores such as Macy’s, Bed Bath and Beyond, Connecticut Science Center and Foot Locker.
“Increasing recycling rates is one of the highest priorities of our BGreen2020 initiative,” Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch said. “We know that increasing recycling rates means a cleaner community for the residents of Bridgeport, a lower carbon footprint and money saved for the city.”
