Dobbs-Ferry based Cabrini of Westchester through subsidiary Cabrini Immigrant Services is offering free legal clinics.
One area of service is to the Haitian community as a result of the aftermath of January”™s earthquake.
Robin Larkins, director of Cabrini Immigrant Services, said that “one out of every four people in Westchester County was born in a different country and with the 2010 Census coming up, it”™s anticipated that the number will grow.”
The organization refers more in-depth client cases that require assistance beyond legal clinics to Cabrini”™s referral base of attorneys.
“Because we”™re based in a small storefront, by building relationships we”™ve been able to open the door to other needs that may exist,” Larkins said. “A lot of what we do is work in collaboration with other organizations and agencies where it may be appropriate.”
Cabrini has partnered with various groups such as the Westchester Hispanic Coalition, whose staff attorneys assist clients, as well as the Pace University Women”™s Justice Center in White Plains.
Cabrini”™s next legal assistance clinic is scheduled for April 18 at Haitian Church of God in Yonkers.
