HAMDEN – President Donald Trump is at or below 40% approval in how he handles his job and his favorability as the GOP tax and spending bill backed by the President is opposed by 53% of registered voters in the latest Quinnipiac University poll.

The poll, which was released this afternoon, includes the opinions of 1,265 self-identified registered voters nationwide who were surveyed from June 5-9 with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points. Thirty-eight percent of voters approve of the way the President is handling his job, while 54% disapprove. In Quinnipiac University’s April 9 poll, 41% approved, while 53% disapproved.

The President’s favorability fell to 40%, while 53% have an unfavorable opinion of him, and 4% haven’t heard enough about him.

Tax and spending bill

While a majority of registered voters oppose the GOP tax and spending bill, only 67% of Republicans support the bill with 22% not offering an opinion. As for Democrats, 89% oppose the bill with 10% not offering an opinion. Fifty-seven percent of independents oppose the bill with 23% not offering an opinion.

Nearly half of voters (47%) think federal funding for Medicaid should increase, 40% think it should stay about the same, and 10% think federal funding for Medicaid should decrease. It is worth noting that among independents, 47% think federal funding for Medicaid should increase, 39% think it should stay about the same, and 11% think it should decrease.

“With Medicaid’s future as a healthcare safety net for millions suddenly uncertain, voters make it clear they want the 60-year-old program for those in need to be handled with care,” said Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy.

International students

More than 7 out of 10 voters (74%) think international students coming to the United States to study at colleges and universities is a good thing for the United States, while 17% think it is a bad thing for the United States.

Democrats (96%-3%), independents (75%-14%), and Republicans (49%-37%) think it is a good thing for the United States.

Trump handling of issues

Voters were asked about Trump’s handling of seven issues:

  • Immigration: 43% approve, 54% disapprove, 3% no opinion
  • Deportations: 40% approve, 56% disapprove, 4% no opinion
  • Economy: 40% approve, 56% disapprove, 4% no opinion
  • Trade: 38Z% approve, 57% disapprove, 6% no opinion
  • Universities: 37% approve, 54% disapprove, 9% no opinion
  • Israel-Hamas conflict: 35% approve, 52% disapprove, 13% no opinion
  • Russia-Ukraine war: 34% approve, 57% disapprove, 10% no opinion.

Congress

Twenty-one percent of voters approve of the way Democrats in Congress are handling their job, while 70% disapprove. This compares to Quinnipiac University’s Feb. 19 poll when 21% of voters approved and 68% disapproved, an all-time low since Quinnipiac University first asked this question of registered voters in March 2009.

In today’s poll, 41% of Democrats approve of the way Democrats in Congress are handling their job, while 53% disapprove.

Thirty-two percent of voters approve of the way Republicans in Congress are handling their job, while 61% disapprove. This compares to Quinnipiac University’s Feb. 19 poll when 40% approved and 52% disapproved, which was an all-time high since Quinnipiac University first asked this question of registered voters in March 2009.

In today’s poll, 79% of Republicans approve of the way Republicans in Congress are handling their job, while 13% disapprove.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Doug Schwartz, Ph.D. since 1994, conducts independent, non-partisan national and state polls on politics and issues. Surveys adhere to industry best practices and are based on probability-based samples using random digit dialing with live interviewers calling landlines and cell phones.
