An investigation is underway after an explosion went off in a apartment building in Bridgeport shortly early in the morning on June 13.
An apartment building was damaged and the surrounding area evacuated, displacing roughly 150 people.
“Despite the fact that there are no reported injuries, it’s a very serious incident and the building is being combed right now by law enforcement,” Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim said at a news conference later in the day.
Shortly after police and firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after midnight, they realized that an explosive device was likely responsible for the damage.
While the investigation is ongoing, Bridgeport Police Chief Roderick Porter said at the news conference that police “do have a person of interest who we’re speaking to at this time who possibly may be responsible for this.”
Geraldine Johnson Elmentary School, located across the street from the apartment building, was closed for the day due to the increased police activity in the area.
CNN reports that the FBI’s New Haven office believes the incident to be isolated and to pose no further danger to the community.
