”¯The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx is in the second of a three-year exploration highlighting plants and gardening histories that are essential contributions to Afro-Caribbean foodways, including those that Caribbean immigrants have brought to the United States.
Curated by Jessica B. Harris, Ph.D., America”™s leading scholar of the foods of the African Diaspora, “The Caribbean Experience” (through Nov. 1), includes eight garden beds featuring”¯an array of more than 140 Caribbean plants. Themed beds of sugarcane; root vegetables; stewpot ingredients; abundant mango, coconut and other fruit trees; plants for remedies reflect the biodiversity of the region and incorporate stories of resilience and resistance, modification and migration, remembrance, reverence and more.
The experience also includes a Poetry Walk, curated by the Cave Canem Foundation, showcasing six poems by Afro-Caribbean poets. Also on the 250-acre campus, the Hudson Garden Grill offers Caribbean menu items inspired by the installation.
