While the high-tech sector, politicians and the media have been abuzz over ChatGPT, the average American doesn”™t appear to be aware of or concerned about this artificial intelligence tool.
In a new Pew Research Center poll of roughly 5,000 American adults, only one-in-five respondents admitted that they”™ve heard of ChatGPT. For those who are aware of the tool, roughly four-in-ten adults under 30 have used it, compared to 19% of 50- to 64-year-olds and 5% of those 65 and older.
Younger adults are more likely than their older peers to have used ChatGPT for education or amusement. For example, among those who have heard of ChatGPT, three-in-ten adults under 30 have used it for learning, compared with 11% of those 50 and older. As for those seeking an amusing distraction, 29% of adults who are under 50 and have heard of ChatGPT have used it for entertainment, while 10% of their older counterparts have done the same.
As for the occupational potential of ChatGPT, those under 50 are more likely than those 50 and older to report having used ChatGPT for work (18% versus 10%). But only 19% of employed adults who have heard of ChatGPT think chatbots will have a major impact on their job, while 36% say it will have a minor impact and 27% expect no impact at all.
