California mass shooting: Investigators in Monterey Park, Torrance and Hemet, California, are trying to figure out a motive for the mass shooting at a Lunar New Year celebration in Monterey Park where 10 people were killed and another 10 wounded. The shooter took his own life after a police chase of his white van ended in Torrance. The man is believed to have lived in a senior citizen community in Hemet.
Selecting new GOP chief: Harmeet Dhillon, an attorney for Donald Trump and pillow maker Mike Lindell are positioning themselves to run against incumbent Ronna McDaniel to become chair of the Republican National Committee. A vote is scheduled to take place at the end of the week at a Republican National Committee meeting in Florida.
Poland wants to send tanks: Poland plans to ask the Germans for permission to send German tanks it owns to Ukraine. Ukraine has been asking for more tanks and Germany was reluctant to send them, saying it would do so only if the U.S. sent more tanks.
Report on ferry sinking: A report released this morning by investigators from Estonia, Finland and Sweden concluded that the sinking of the ferryboat M/S Estonia in 1997 in which 852 people died was caused by bow doors designed to keep water out opening in rough seas. The report said there was no sign of an explosion on board or a collision.
Spotify layoffs: Spotify is planning to cut its workforce by 6%, about 600 people. In a message to employees this morning, Spotify’s CEO Daniel Ek said employees who are let go would on average receive five months severance pay. He said previous efforts made by the company to reduce costs have not been enough.
Challenge to Sinema: Democratic Congressman Ruben Gallego this morning announced that he intends to run for the Senate seat held by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who had been a Democrat but recently switched to become an Independent. Sinema has not yet announced whether she’ll run for reelection. A three-way race would give the Republican candidate a better chance of winning.
