Women”™s Center awarded $20,000

Danbury”™s Women”™s Center, a nonprofit providing services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and major life transitions, was awarded $20,000 from the Fairfield County Community Foundation”™s fund for women and girls. The money helps to support the center”™s services, which served a total of 25,960 residents in 2014.

Cohen retires from STAR

Beth Cohen of Norwalk”™s STAR Inc. Rubino Family Center Birth to Three Program, a program that assists families with meeting the developmental and health-related needs of infants and toddlers with delays or disabilities, is retiring after serving nearly 20 years at STAR and after 40 years in the field. In honor of Cohen”™s years of service, the STAR board of directors is establishing the Beth Cohen Birth to Three Family Fund to help purchase supplies for parents to aid their child”™s development, to provide opportunities for parents to network and strengthen their support community and to enhance the connections with STAR for children and families.

Dorf & Nelson welcomes new partner

Nicholas J. Chivily of New Canaan joined the law firm of Dorf & Nelson LLP as a partner, working in the Westchester/Rye, N.Y. headquarters office. Chivily joins the firm after serving as a partner and head of Hartford-based Mayo Crowe LLC”™s New York office for 10 years. Chivily is a member of the Westchester County Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association and the Connecticut State Bar Association. His law degree is from Fordham University in New York.

Ability Beyond names Reina director

Bethel-based Ability Beyond, a nonprofit providing services to individuals with disabilities in Connecticut and Westchester County, N.Y., announced Jacqueline Reina is returning as director of lead services provided in New York. Reina”™s responsibilities include ensuring the quality of services and facilitating person-centered planning for each individual supported by the organization. She is overseeing day-to-day operations and managing team of more than 100 employees.

Reina previously served as Ability Beyond”™s director of clinical services for both New York and Connecticut.

First County Bank appoints four

Stamford-based First County Bank appointed four new corporators at its June 17 annual meeting. A corporator is a role offered to community representatives as part of the bank”™s mutual charter. The bank welcomes the following to its board of corporators: David Genovese, CEO, Baywater Properties; Lisa Foster, vice president of global marketing, business acquisition and recruiting, Marketing Management Analytics; Dominic Franchella, owner, Stamford Ford Lincoln; and John Polera, president of the Law Office of John C. Polera.

TD Bank donates to Family Centers Agency

TD Bank donated $2,336 to Norwalk-based Family Centers Agency, a nonprofit human services organization as part of the bank”™s Green Friday initiative, July 31. In addition to its donation, TD Bank matched up to $2,000 in coins collected for Family Centers.

Goodwill of Connecticut receives accreditation

Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) International accredited Bridgeport”™s Goodwill of Western and Northern Connecticut, a nonprofit, for a period of three years for its community employment services: employment supports and job development, community housing, supported living and organizational employment services program. This is the seventh consecutive three-year accreditation that CARF has awarded to Goodwill of Western and Northern Connecticut. An organization receiving this recognition has demonstrated its commitment to offering programs and services that are measurable, accountable and of high quality.

LMMM”™s annual flea market

Norwalk”™s Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum hosts its eighth annual flea market led by chairwoman Lynne Byington, Sept. 20, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mathews Park, 295 West Ave., Norwalk. The market features a variety of items, from new to repurposed and vintage, including antiques, furniture, collectibles, jewelry, household items, clothing and toys. William B. Meyer helps furry friends

William B. Meyer Inc. employees deliver donations of pet supplies to Connecticut Humane Society.
Stratford-based William B. Meyer Inc., a storage and logistics company, recently donated more than 1,172 pet items to the Connecticut Humane Society, a nonprofit. The company”™s challenge, “Barking Into 100 Years,” tied into both National Pet Month and the company”™s 100-year anniversary, running May 15-June 29. The items delivered by employees included nearly 90 pounds of dry dog and cat food, more than 600 cans of dog and cat food, boxes of treats, an assortment of new used towels and blankets, dryer sheets, cat litter, leashes and collars, reusable fabric bags, pet toys, pet beds, rabbit food and pet food bowls. In addition, the company is also donating $1,000 to the Connecticut Humane Society.

”˜Team Retail”™ steps to victory

Stamford”™s First County Bank”™s “Team Retail” won the step ahead challenge where employees formed teams for a competition based on the number of steps they took within the month of June. The challenge was sponsored by First County Bank”™s Working on Wellness “WOW” committee, which encourages employee health through fitness, nutrition and stress reduction.

American Cancer Society to roast Bobby Valentine

The American Cancer Society appointed Steve Folb of Westport and FJ Mercede of Stamford to serve as cochairmen for its annual “Local Philanthropist Roast,” set for Thurs., Sept. 17, beginning 6 p.m., The Italian Center of Stamford, 1620 Newfield Ave., Stamford. Additional committee members include Megan Couch of Weston, Greg Durkin of Stamford, Frank Ramppen of New Canaan and Steve Wise of Stamford. This year”™s honoree is baseball stalwart Bobby Valentine. SPEF coordinates Barrett Park improvement project

Stamford Public Education Foundation (SPEF), a nonprofit whose mission is to support the students and teachers in Stamford”™s public schools, coordinated a community improvement project at Barrett Park on Newfield Avenue in Stamford. More than 25 Deloitte employees completed the project as part of Deloitte”™s 16th annual day of service, Impact Day. The day celebrated Deloitte”™s year-round commitment to making an impact that matters in the communities where their employees live and work.
