Mall of America to install shot spotters: Reporting from WCCO of Bloomington, Wisconsin show that the famous Mall of America has plans to install ShotSpotter technology. The technology uses acoustic analysis to pinpoint the location a shot was fired to improve emergency response and automatically start procedures if a shot is detected. This comes in the wake of a 2022 at the mall on Christmas Eve. Mall of America has already installed metal detectors and implemented facial recognition technology to scan customers.
California high schools implement heat rules: A law which went into effect earlier this year has canceled practice for numerous sports across the state. Temperatures over 100 degrees pose risks for children’s health, and new measurement systems have allowed schools to better assess the cumulative effect of temperature, humidity and air pressure. In response to warming average temperatures, more sports, particularly football teams, are holding practice after sunset.
New Weinstein Case: A grand jury is hearing a new case against the disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein, and could choose to indict him with new sexual assault allegations from three accusers. The indictment could come as soon as Friday, and do not include allegations from Jessica Mann and Mimi Haley. The conviction involving Mann and Haley’s testimony was overturned in May.
Megayacht victims died of “dry drowning”: Four of the seven victims who died in the sinking of the megayacht Bayesian off the coast of Italy were found to have died of “atypical drowning” according to autopsies. At least five of the victims were found inside of an air bubble within one of the cabins, and died not from water inhalation but from breathing air that had been exhausted of oxygen.
