European Rocket: The European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launched its first heavy-lift Ariane 6 rocket on July 9 from a launchpad in French Guyana. This test flight came after years of delays, and was still marred by a glitch which caused one engine to shut down during a reignition phase which prevented the completion of all mission objectives. Nonetheless the ESA has indicated plans to continue using the design with hopes to compete with private sector SpaceX and Blue Horizon craft that are currently launching satellites and servicing the ISS.
Biden Keeps Nomination: President Joe Biden managed to hold onto the nomination of the Democratic Party after a tense moment on Tuesday where many dissatisfied Democrats pointed to his poor debate performance and declining poll numbers to argue that the party needs to consider a new candidate. Congressional representatives and Senators, including some supporters of Biden, expressed doubts about his ability to defeat former President Trump a second time.
Israel Strikes School: 27 people are dead and 53 injured after an Israeli airstrike in Khan Younis struck a school complex housing displaced people from across Gaza. Video circulating on social media shows a soccer game interrupted by the blast, with players and bystanders rushing to help casualties. The IDF claims it used a “precision munition” near the school on a target who participated in the October 7 attack.
Journalist’s Family Killed: A manhunt is underway in London for 26 year old Kyle Clifford who allegedly killed the wife and two daughters of John Hunt, a BBC journalist who commentates on the Live at Five racing program. The three women were killed with a crossbow on July 10 in the town of Bushley in Herefordshire. The daughters were aged 25 and 28, their mother was 61. The police believe it to be a “targeted incident.”
Alec Baldwin Trial: Opening statements for the trial of Alec Baldwin for involuntary manslaughter are set to begin today. The actor is being tried for the accidental killing of cinematographer Haylana Hutchins on the set of “Rust” three years ago. The trial is occurring in Santa Fe, New Mexico. If convicted Baldwin could face up to 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine. The film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, was convicted in May and sentenced to 18 months but is appealing the decision.
