U.N.: The U.N. General Assembly is meeting in Manhattan, with numerous world leaders including President Biden coming to town. Widespread security measures are in effect, including road closures. This year’s General Assembly annual session began on Sept 10. This is the 79th General Assembly session since the U.N.’s founding.
Debate: After stating that he will not participate in another debate with Vice President Harris, Donald Trump told reporters that he would participate in another debate if he got into the right mood. Harris already said that said she accepts CNN’s invitation to debate Trump on CNN on Oct. 23. Harris’ campaign said that no one should rely on what Trump said and dismissed Trump’s rejecting another debate by saying that he changes his position every day.
Airstrikes: Lebanon’s Health Ministry said today that at least 100 people were killed and 400 injured in new Israeli airstrikes. Israel had warned Lebanese civilians to leave areas where Hezbollah militants were operating since they would be attacked. Lebanon’s government ordered schools in the southern part of the country to close today and tomorrow saying the move was necessary because they fear Israel would attack the schools.
Government spending: House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer both praised Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson for proposing a short-term continuing resolution that would provide money to keep the government open for three months. Johnson’s latest proposal drops a restriction on voter registration that Donald Trump wanted to be included with any bill to fund the government. Johnson’s proposed legislation would need to be passed before the current spending authorization runs out Oct. 1.
Assassination suspect: The Justice Department has revealed that the man who was captured after having set up a firing position to target Donald Trump at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, had previously written a note saying that he intended to kill Trump. The Justice Department used that in arguing to a judge today that suspect Ryan Wesley Routh should not be released on bail pending trial. The Justice Department also said that Routh poses a flight risk.
Shooting: Authorities in Birmingham, Alabama, reported there were no arrests as of early this morning in their search for suspects in the weekend’s mass shooting that left four dead and 17 injured. Police said that popular bars and restaurants in downtown Birmingham were targeted. The White House said that President Biden and Vice President Harris condemn the shootings. It said the federal government is working with local agencies on the case.
