Menendez indictment: New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez and his wife have been indicted by a federal grand jury in New York on bribery charges. Menendez is a Democrat. He had been indicted on similar charges about 10 years ago but was not convicted. Menendez and his wife are charged with accepting improper gifts and payments from three New Jersey businessmen. The new indictment was reported by the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
Missile attack: TASS, the Russian news agency, reported this morning that Russia’s Defense Ministry said Ukraine staged a missile attack against the headquarters of its naval fleet in the Black Sea. The naval headquarters are in the city of Sebastopol. The headquarters building was damaged, one Russian was killed and Russian air defenses shot down five of the Ukrainian missiles, according to the TASS report.
Zelenskyy in Canada: Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is Canada today to speak to Canada’s Parliament. His visit to Canada comes after talks in Washington yesterday with President Biden and members of Congress regarding more U.S. aid in the war with Russia. Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau welcomed Zelenskyy and the two began a round of talks regarding additional military aid from Canada.
Storm warning: The National Hurricane Center says that a tropical storm off the coast of the Carolinas will produce heavy rain and high winds along the East Coast today and tomorrow. The storm was located about 330 miles southeast of Charleston, South Carolina, this morning. Rainfall of up to seven inches has been forecast by tomorrow for an area stretching into Virginia with lesser amounts further north.
U.S. and China talk: U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and China’s Vice Premier have begun a series of talks in Washington designed to ease tensions and establish ongoing communications regarding economic competition between the two countries. The talks are expected to pave the way for President Biden to meet with Chinese President Xi in November at an economic conference in San Francisco.
Cisco makes $28B buy: The technology company Cisco is buying the digital security company Splunk for $28 billion. Cisco is in the business of developing, manufacturing and selling networking hardware and telecom equipment. Splunk has products to organize and search large amounts of data and provide data security. The combined companies are expected to work on products for computer and data security, threat detection and threat prevention.
