Amsterdam attacks: Sixty-three people have been arrested by police following attacks on Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam. The attacks took place after a Europe League soccer game that pitted an Israeli team and a Dutch team against each other. The Dutch team won 5 to 0. Israel says it is arranging flights to get its citizens out of Amsterdam. Â
Chief of staff: Donald Trump has selected the co-manager of his campaign to be his White House chief of staff. She’s Susie Wiles and will be the first female selected as White House chief of staff. Wiles is credited with being a strict doorkeeper for Trump during the campaign, keeping close control over who was allowed to meet with Trump. Wiles is the daughter of the late sports broadcaster Pat Summerall.
Interest rates: By a unanimous vote, the Federal Reserve’s Open Markets Committee cut interest rates by one-quarter of a point. This brings the Fed’s target interest rate range down to 4.25% to 4.75%. At a news conference, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said that the result of the presidential election will not affect the Fed’s decisions on interest rates. He also said he will not step down before his current term expires in 2026.
Ukraine: Hungarian Dictator Viktor Orban speaking to a meeting of European leaders predicted that Donald Trump will end U.S. support for Ukraine and hand a victory to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Orban said that Ukraine has already lost the war that Putin started and that European countries should withdraw their support for Ukraine. Orban is one of the dictators most admired by Donald Trump.
Fire: More than 130 buildings have been destroyed and almost 100 damaged by the wildfire that continues to rage in Ventura County, California. The fire covered more than 32 square miles as of Friday morning. The fire was edging closer to the Santa Paula city limits. Forecasts call for the high winds, which at times have hit 80 miles an hour, to diminish today, which would help firefighters in their battle to contain the blaze.
Spouses: Federal Judge J. Campbell Barker in Texas has struck down a program instituted by the Biden Administration that allowed undocumented immigrants who are the spouses of U.S. citizens to apply for a Green Card without having to leave the U.S. and risk not being allowed back in. About 500,000 people were protected by the program. Sixteen Republican state attorneys general filed a lawsuit to block the program. Barker previously had put the program on hold in response to the lawsuit.
