Trump’s second indictment:Â Former President Donald Trump has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges in connection with his unauthorized possession of classified government documents. It’s Trump’s second indictment, the first being by a Manhattan grand jury in the Stormy Daniels hush money case. Trump is due in federal court in Miami on Tuesday to be arraigned and answer the charges. Trump revealed the indictment last night on his internet site Truth Social. It is reported there are seven counts in the indictment including violating the espionage act and obstruction of justice. This is the first time in U.S. history that a president or former president has been charged with federal crimes.
McCarthy and others support Trump:Â Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is among the Republican leaders who have come to Trump’s defense. McCarthy and the others are following a common theme that claims it was President Biden who indicted Trump. The Republican talking points ignore the fact that the indictment was handed up by a federal grand jury in a state Trump won in 2020 that was composed of ordinary citizens who voted to indict based on evidence they were presented.
Secret Service meets on logistics:Â The Secret Service has been reported holding meetings to work out logistics for transporting Trump from his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey, to federal court in Miami on Tuesday. Heightened security measures are being put in place. While it is anticipated that Trump will be fingerprinted as part of the booking process, it was not immediately disclosed whether a mug shot will be taken. When he was booked in Manhattan on his indictment in the Stormy Daniels hush money case the mug shot was dispensed with.
Supreme Court voting rights ruling:Â The Supreme Court in an unexpected five to four decision has thrown out Alabama’s Congressional voting district map and given a boost to the Voting Rights Act. Conservative Chief Justice John Roberts and Conservative Justice Brett Cavanaugh joined with the court’s three liberal judges to rule that the Congressional district map drawn up by the Alabama Republican Legislature discriminates against Black voters.
Pat Robertson dead at 93:Â The Christian Broadcasting Network, which was founded by Pat Robertson who died yesterday at age 93, is urging followers of Robertson to show their respect for him by contributing to it, Robertson’s Operation Blessing and Regent University’s Pat Robertson Memorial Scholarship Fund. Robertson had a national following both as a television evangelist and political figure, having run for president. The Christian Broadcasting Network announced his death in a news release but did not immediately reveal the cause of death.
Wildfire smoke eases in Northeast:Â Smoke from the Canadian wildfires was moving more heavily into southern states including the Carolinas and Georgia today while easing somewhat in the Northeast. In addition to affecting the U.S., some of the smoke has been following a path across Greenland and Iceland and this morning was reported in Norway.
