Another shooting by Trump administration agents
A married couple was hospitalized in Portland, Oregon, after being shot by U.S. Border Patrol agents on Thursday. A law enforcement official said the agents were conducting a traffic stop and fired when the suspects attempted to run them over. Meanwhile, administration officials continue claiming that the woman who was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis had run over ICE agents with her car even though videos clearly show that was not the case. Portland’s mayor has called on ICE to suspend operations in the city until yesterday’s shooting is fully investigated.
Trump administration blocks local and state investigators
The Trump administration has blocked Minneapolis and Minnesota law enforcement investigators from working with the FBI to investigate the killing by an ICE agent in Minneapolis of a 37-year-old woman. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz cast doubts on whether the Trump administration could be trusted to investigate itself and deliver an honest report. Vice President Vance spoke Thursday at the White House and repeated administration claims that the woman ran over ICE agents with her car even though videos show that was not what happened. An ICE agent can be seen on video firing two shots at close range through the open driver’s side window after the car had turned away and was driving away and could not have hit him.
Low December job gains cap off a sluggish year
Hiring slowed at the end of last year, as employers added an estimated 50,000 jobs in December and the unemployment rate dipped to 4.4%, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data released Friday. December’s estimated job gains capped off what was a sluggish year for the U.S. labor market. 2025 was the weakest year of employment growth outside of recession years since 2003, BLS data shows. The labor market, which was already slowing heading into 2025, cooled sharply as hiring stalled out across most industries, a pullback economists attributed to high uncertainty (in part due to massive shifts in trade and immigration policy) as well as stubborn inflation and high interest rates.
Move to limit Trump’s powers in Venezuela
Lawmakers are pushing to limit the powers of President Donald Trump in Venezuela as uncertainty mounts over his next steps in the deepening conflict. On Thursday, a handful of Republicans joined Democrats to advance a resolution that would limit future U.S. military force in Venezuela without congressional approval. The final resolution is not guaranteed to pass, but the vote deals a symbolic rebuke to the president. It comes just days after the Trump administration launched a strike on Venezuela and captured President Nicolás Maduro without the approval of Congress.
Iran internet blackout
Iran was hit with a nationwide internet blackout on Thursday as mass anti-government protests spread amid anger over economic hardship and security crackdowns. Authorities shut down internet access snd phone lines shortly after protests erupted in Tehran and other major cities, though the blackout did not immediately stop videos of the demonstrations — now in their second week — from circulating online. At least 45 protesters have been killed since the unrest began, according to the Iran Human Rights NGO. The group says hundreds more have been injured and more than 2,000 people detained.
Trump has more plans to rebuild White House
New details emerged on Thursday about President Trump’s East Wing expansion at the White House — including a “grand stair” — and changes to the West Wing Colonnade as well. For the first time, a second story on the West Wing Colonnade was unveiled. It is designed to mirror the East Wing addition after the previous building was demolished last year. Architect Shalom Baranes offered new insight into the size and scope of the project, which drew mild pushback from some members of the National Capital Planning Commission. The East Wing expansion will include a 22,000-square-foot ballroom capable of seating 1,000 guests, with the overall expansion totaling roughly 89,000 square feet. Above-ground construction is expected to begin around April.
