Zelenskyy speech:Â Ukrainian President Zelenskyy spoke to his nation to mark the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion. He said he was grateful to everyone who made the defense against the Russians possible. Referencing attacks on civilians, Zelenskyy said that the whole world now realizes what Russia is capable of doing.
China calls for peace talks:Â China this morning called for a cease-fire and peace talks between the Russians and Ukrainians to end the war that Russian President Vladimir Putin started. China’s Foreign Ministry called for maintaining the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all countries.
NTSB reports on train wreck:Â National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy gave a briefing in East Palestine, Ohio, on the investigation into the train wreck that resulted in a toxic chemical spill and massive fire. The NTSB’s preliminary report finds that sensors on the track detected that a wheel bearing on one of the tank cars had overheated and should have sent out an alarm for the crew to stop the train. Investigators have studied surveillance video from several miles before the place where derailment occurred showing sparks coming from underneath the train.
Air fryer recall:Â The U.S. Product Safety Commission has announced that the manufacturer Cosori is recalling two million of its air fryer ovens because of the risk of overheating and fire. The countertop appliances were made in the U.S. and Mexico. Consumers are urged to stop using the Cosori Air Fryers immediately. There have been more than 205 reports of them overheating and burning.
Winter weather:Â Power outages are reported in the Midwest, especially Michigan, due to ice and snow. At the same time, the National Weather Service has issued warnings for another storm in various locations in California including mountains near Los Angeles where up to five feet of snow could fall.
Consumer prices: The Commerce Department this morning reported a 0.6% increase in consumer prices from December to January up from the 0.2% increase from November to December. The yearly increase now is at 5.4%, a slight uptick from the 5.3% recorded last month.
