Unidentified objects:Â Three objects were shot down this weekend by the U.S. military, one yesterday over Lake Huron, Michigan, and one over Canada and another over Alaska. Pentagon officials reported today they did not yet know what the three objects were. Their shooting down follows the shooting down of a Chinese spy balloon. The Pentagon said the objects were not believed to pose security threats to the U.S.
Chinese accusation:Â China this morning accused the U.S. of sending 10 spy balloons into its airspace in the past year. A spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council said this morning that the claim by the Chinese is false and that the U.S. has not sent any spy balloons into Chinese airspace.
Earthquake death toll climbs:Â The death toll in the Turkey and Syria earthquake has now passed 35,000. The Turkish government is investigating to determine who is responsible for so many buildings not meeting building codes. The British Broadcasting Corporation found that some buildings that collapsed should have been built to meet new earthquake resistant standards but were not even though their builders advertised that they were.
Warning to get out of Russia:Â The State Department this morning issued a warning for U.S. citizens to leave Russia immediately and not to travel there. The State Department said that because of Russia’s war against Ukraine, it has become too dangerous for U.S. citizens to be in Russia where they could face detention by Russian authorities and the U.S. Embassy has only limited ability to help.
Santos’ accounting:Â The New York Times reported this morning that Republican Congressman George Santos cannot account for $365,000 in campaign funds. It’s reported that his financial reporting lists the $365,000 as a fee charged by a fundraising group, but the fundraising group said it did not charge that fee to the Santos campaign.
Super Bowl:Â The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in last night’s Super Bowl game. The score was 38 to 35, with the Chiefs scoring a last-minute field goal. Many players complained they kept slipping on the surface at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
