All governors now invited to White House
The National Governors Association (NGA) says all governors now have been invited to a traditionally bipartisan meeting at the White House next week. The White House changed its initial position that would have allowed only Republicans and excluded Democratic governors. However, Donald Trump continued to rage against two of the nation’s Democratic governors and the organization’s co-chair, GOP Gov. Kevin Stitt. “I am writing to inform you that President Donald J. Trump is inviting all governors of the 55 States and territories to the Friday, Feb. 20 NGA Business Breakfast at 8:30am est,” Stitt wrote Wednesday in a letter to the organization’s members that was shared with CNN.
Glove found in Nancy Guthrie case
Investigators in Arizona continue searching rugged terrain near the home of Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” host Savannah Guthrie, after she was reported missing 12 days ago. On Wednesday, a black glove was recovered about 1.5 miles from her residence. A video showed FBI agents picking up the glove from the side of a road. It’s unclear whether authorities believe it was one of the gloves worn by the person in the doorbell camera footage captured the night of her disappearance. Law enforcement officials say they have received over 18,000 tips since Guthrie was reported missing and are undergoing an intensive process to work through them.
Airspace closure explanation
With the FAA canceling the unprecedented 10-day airspace shutdown over El Paso, Texas, new details are emerging about what may have prompted it. Multiple sources told CNN that the Pentagon planned to begin using a high-energy, counter-drone laser in the area without consulting the FAA about the risk to civilian flights. The FAA responded by instituting a temporary flight restriction citing “security concerns,” which was then lifted after about eight hours. This comes as the Trump administration has claimed that a Mexican cartel drone crossing into U.S. airspace is what triggered the flight restriction centered on El Paso International Airport.
Thune says progress being made on ICE issue
Facing a Friday deadline to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Senate Majority Leader John Thune said negotiators are making progress on proposed changes to ICE. Democrats have signaled they will not support the funding measure unless it includes significant changes to immigration enforcement policy. Republicans, meanwhile, are urging President Trump to stand firm against Democrats’ DHS demands as the clock ticks toward another shutdown. Separately, the head of Customs and Border Protection said this week that several investigations are underway into allegations of misconduct by federal officers during Trump’s immigration enforcement surge.
Republicans join with Democrats in vote against Trump tariffs
Some Republicans sent a blunt message to Donald Trump that they do not support the tariff regime that he has made the centerpiece of his second term. Six Republicans joined with Democrats in the vote to effectively repeal the president’s tariffs on Canada, the culmination of months of consternation in the GOP over the president’s trade war that has quietly rattled even some of his staunchest loyalists in Congress. The vote provoked a threat from Trump that there will be consequences for any Republican who votes against his tariffs, including primary challenges. The six Republicans who voted with Democrats in the bid to cancel the tariffs were: Reps. Thomas Massie, Don Bacon, Kevin Kiley, Jeff Hurd, Brian Fitzpatrick and Dan Newhouse.
Ukrainian Olympic athlete disqualified
Ukrainian skeleton slider Vladyslav Heraskevych has been disqualified from the Winter Olympics for wearing a helmet featuring images of athletes killed during Russia’s war in Ukraine. The helmet displayed 24 of the more than 500 athletes who’ve died since the start of the conflict. Earlier this week, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said it understood his situation but ruled the helmet “contravenes” its guidelines on political statements, offering to allow him to wear a black armband in commemoration instead. After standing his ground, Heraskevych was withdrawn from the Olympic Games today for “refusing to adhere” to the IOC’s athlete expression guidelines.
