Fani Willis: CNN reports this morning that sources in the district attorney’s office in Fulton County, Georgia, report that District Attorney Fani Willis will not recuse herself and will continue leading the prosecution of Donald Trump and others in the 2020 election case. Willis has been under pressure to step down because of allegations of her having an affair with the lead prosecutor in the case. Her critics also allege that she and lead prosecutor Nathan Wade have personally profited from prosecuting Trump and his co-defendants.
Hangar collapse: Three people were killed and at least nine injured when a hangar under construction at the airport in Boise, Idaho, collapsed. The 39,000-square-foot hangar is owned by the Jackson Jet Center, an air charter company.Flight operations at the
Boise Airport were not affected by the collapse. The cause of the collapse was under investigation.
U.S. hits Houthi location: The U.S. Central Command says that new attacks were carried out early today against a Houthi facility in Yemen that controlled the flight of drones. The Houthi rebels have used drones carrying explosives to attack shipping in the Red Sea. The Houthi’s are supported by Iran. The U.S. believes that the Islamic Resistance in Iraq is responsible for the recent drone attack that killed three U.S. soldiers at a base in Jordan.
Orban caves: The European Union countries have agreed to a $54 billion aid package for Ukraine. It was a unanimous action by all 27 countries. Hungary, which had been a holdout, changed its position and came out in support of the aid package. Hungarian dictator Viktor Orban had been under pressure to stop blocking the aid. Orban had been against Ukraine and supporting Russia since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Trump donor dollars: Donald Trump in 2023 spent $55.6 million of money his supporters had donated to help pay for his presidential campaign on legal fees according to new documents filed with the Federal Election Commission. The documents show that money from donors that went to two of Trump’s committees was used to pay lawyers defending Trump in various court cases. Some money from donors also went to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort to pay for events that were staged to show support for Trump.
Tax bill: On a vote of 370 to 70 the House has passed a $78 billion tax cut bill. Whether the bill will be approved by the Senate remains unclear. The bill allows businesses to immediately deduct 100% of expenses for equipment instead of having to amortize the cost over several years. It also would allow full deductions for research and development. The bill would expand child tax credits. It also would expand tax credits for building low-income housing. Extreme right-wing Republicans in the House were unsuccessful in their efforts to kill the bipartisan bill.
