Tyre Nichols’ funeral:Â Vice President Harris is in Memphis for the funeral of Tyre Nichols, the Black man who was beaten by Memphis police following a traffic stop and died three days later. The Reverend Al Sharpton was selected to deliver the eulogy.
Santos leaves committees:Â Republican Congressman George Santos is temporarily stepping down from his positions on the House Committee on Small Business and the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee. His action follows a meeting he had with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. A poll by Newsday and Siena College shows that 78% of the registered voters in Santo’s New York district say he should resign from Congress.
Brady retires:Â Football star Tom Brady announced this morning that he’s retiring after 23 seasons of playing. He had retired before but returned to football. Brady says this time he’s retiring “for good.”
Baldwin charged:Â Court documents filed by prosecutors in Santa Fe, New Mexico, charge actor Alec Baldwin and Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was in charge of weapons on the set of the movie “Rust,” with involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of cinematographer Hayna Hutchins. The possible sentences range from 18 months in jail and a $5,000 fine to five years in prison.
Aid for Ukraine:Â The news agency Reuters reports that U.S. officials have told it that the U.S. is preparing another $2 billion aid package to Ukraine. The new aid would include rockets with a range of just under 100 miles. Artillery and ammunition would be included in the aid package.
Interest rates:Â The Federal Reserve is expected to raise interest rates this afternoon, with Fed Chairman Jerome Powell expected to hold a news conference after the announcement. Observers expect this latest interest rate hike to be a small one and the Fed is likely to hold out the possibility that there may be a pause in making additional interest rate hikes as inflation slows.
Monkeys recovered:Â Two emperor tamarin monkeys stolen from the Dallas Zoo have been found in an abandoned house. Police are trying to determine whether the monkey kidnapping is related to recent vandalism at the zoo or the taking of a dozen monkeys from the Zoosiana Zoo in Broussard, Louisiana. Rare monkeys can be worth thousands of dollars on the illegal market.
