Trump threatens to end a whole civilization
Donald Trump this morning threatened to destroy an entire civilization tonight if Iran doesn’t surrender and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which it did not close until after Trump started his war against Iran. In an internet post shortly after 8 a.m., Trump said, “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.” He described what was going to happen tonight, either Iranian surrender or his massive destruction, as “one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the world.” The Iranian government says that 14 million Iranians have volunteered to surround facilities that they expect Trump would target in a new round of attacks. International humanitarian law experts are among those who have characterized Trump’s previous threats against civilian infrastructure as threatening war crimes.
Greene says Trump has gone insane
Marjorie Taylor Greene, the former far-right Republican Congresswoman from Georgia and once a die-hard Trump supporter, now says that she believes Trump has gone insane. Greene was reacting to Trump’s expletive-laced rant on the internet on Easter Sunday. Referencing Trump, Greene said in part: “Everyone in his administration that claims to be a Christian needs to fall on their knees and beg forgiveness from God and stop worshipping the President and intervene in Trump’s madness. I know all of you and him and he has gone insane, and all of you are complicit. Our President is not a Christian and his words and actions should not be supported by Christians. This is not making America great again, this is evil.”
Georgia special election
A Democrat’s long-shot bid to flip former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s deep-red Georgia district heads to a runoff today, drawing national attention as Republicans try to protect their razor-thin House majority. The race to replace Greene, the former ally of President Trump turned critic who resigned from Congress in January, advanced to a runoff when neither Democrat Shawn Harris nor Republican Clay Fuller secured a majority in March’s crowded election. A potential win by Harris, although a tall task, would further tighten Speaker Mike Johnson’s margin — especially with an expected Democratic pickup in an upcoming New Jersey special election, leaving him little room to lose votes.
Vance campaigns for Hungarian dictator
Vice President Vance is in Hungary campaigning for the re-election of Hungary’s dictator Viktor Orban. Orban is facing growing disgust from the Hungarian people for his hardline immigration policies, politicization of the justice system and attacks on the press. Orban has close ties with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Vance claimed today that the two leaders who have probably done the most to actually end the war that Putin started when he invaded Ukraine are Donald Trump and Orban. Trump has endorsed Orban as a truly strong and powerful leader, with a proven track record of delivering phenomenal results.
Historic spaceflight
The four Artemis II astronauts are headed back to Earth after venturing farther from the planet than any humans have ever gone, breaking the 1970 record set by Apollo 13. On Monday, they completed a lunar flyby, sweeping around the moon’s far side on an unprecedented path and capturing rare images of terrain never seen before. The crew also enjoyed a total solar eclipse from their perspective in the Orion spacecraft. After the milestone, President Donald Trump called to congratulate the astronauts. “Today you’ve made history,” he said, inviting them to the Oval Office upon their return.
Offer to buy Universal Music for $60B
In London, Pershing Square Capital Management, founded by billionaire Bill Ackman, has offered to buy Universal Music Group, the record company behind Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar and Sabrina Carpenter among other artists in a deal that would be worth about $60 billion. Universal Music is the world’s largest record company. It would merge with Pershing Square SPARC Holdings, a special-purpose acquisition company. The resulting company will be listed on the New York Stock Exchange, moving Universal Music’s listing from Europe to the United States. The record company, whose artists also include Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande and Florence + the Machine, currently is listed in Amsterdam, though its operational headquarters are located in Santa Monica, California.
