Putin visits Ukraine:Â Russian President Vladimir Putin has made another trip to Ukraine, this time visiting with his military commanders in two sections of Ukraine that were captured by Russia forces. According to the Russian news agency Tass, when a Kremlin spokesman was asked about Putin’s impression of morale among Russian troops, the spokesperson declined to provide an answer.
Sudan cease-fire:Â There’s a 24-hour cease-fire in Sudan in the battle for control of the country being fought by the Sudanese military and the rebel group called Rapid Support Forces. The generals leading each side are rivals seeking to assume power in Sudan. A convoy of vehicles from the U.S. Embassy came under attack apparently from members of the Rapid Support Forces. About 185 people have been killed and 1,800 wounded in the fighting since Saturday.
Gershkovich ordered held:Â A Russia court has denied bail for Evan Gershkovich, the Wall Street Journal reporter who was arrested on spy charges. He was ordered held in jail while awaiting trial. The U.S. Ambassador to Russia was allowed to meet with Gershkovich and said he seemed to be in good health.
Goldman Sachs financials:Â Investment giant Goldman Sachs this morning reported first quarter 2023 revenues of $12.22 billion and net earnings of $3.23 billion. David Solomon, chairman and CEO of Goldman Sachs, said the company is operating from a position of strength and has strong liquidity and a robust capital position. The company was supervising $2.67 trillion in assets during the first quarter of the year.
Journalists targeted:Â Oklahoma’s Gov. Kevin Stitt says four officials of McCurtain County in the state must resign after they were recorded discussing killing newspaper publisher Bruce Willingham and his son Chris who is a reporter for the local newspaper his father owns. One of the county officials who discussed killing the journalists is the McCurtain County sheriff.
Boston Marathon winner:Â Evans Chebet of Kenya won the Boston Marathon yesterday for the second year in a row. Ten years ago, on April 15, 2013, two terrorists set off pressure cooker bombs near the finish line of the marathon killing three people and injuring more than 280 others.
