Its Yonkers space once turned out more carpet than any factory in the world. During World War II, that manufacturing might was translated to canvas for the military. On Saturday and Sunday, April 20-21, the YoHo Artists Studios at 578 and 540 Nepperhan Ave. will celebrate 10 years of the same blocks-long building”™s art-themed incarnation.
The 10th annual “YoHo Open Studios” weekend, will feature dozens of professional artists, sculptors, craftspeople and musicians exhibiting their work for the public. The events run noon to 5 p.m. each day.
Studio tours will include the newly refurbished 10,000 square feet embracing 25 new artist studios on the fourth floor. Owner George Huang estimated hard and soft costs of the recent expansion at $500,000.
The YoHo studios are at the landmarked Alexander Smith Carpet Mills in Yonkers at Nepperhan and Lake Avenues. Free parking will be available as well as elevator access. Live music, food and drink will be available.
Rent for the new studios begins at $300 and includes utilities.
Additional information including directions and a roster of participating artists is available at the YoHo Artists page on Facebook.com and YoHoArtists.com.
If you check the New York Times archives you will see that Debra Sherwood founded YoHo Studios,in 1985, same concept, I built some of the walls, and annual open studios. I gave the materials to George Huang last year, but continues to neglect the truth. I thought you should know. I’ll be writing to Wikipedia as well.
