Sprint Corp. announced plans Wednesday to close its customer service center in Elmsford, laying off 154 employees.
The closing is a part of a company-wide downsizing, as the No. 3 largest mobile carrier in the U.S. expands its 4G LTE service.
Last summer the company announced it would layoff 800 positions within the coming months, according to reports. Layoffs have been reported in Sacramento, Calif., Orlando, Fla., Fort Worth, Texas and Overland Park, Kan., where the company is headquartered.
The Elmsford call center will close April 8.
Last year SoftBank Corp., a Japanese telecommunications company, acquired Sprint and had introduced the possibility of acquiring T-Mobile in order to better compete with the two wireless titans, Verizon Wireless and AT&T. Analysts predict the acquisition would not gain regulatory approval.
