Gemm Learning has recently expanded from its one location in Pelham and is opening centers in Greenwich, Conn., and Scarsdale.
“The program has been around for quite a long time ”“ 10 years ”“ but up till now the only ones who have been able to benefit from it have been schools that are lucky enough to have a connection with us or through a learning professional”™s recommendation,” said Geoff Nixon, founder of Gemm, a learning intervention center. “Instead of offering instruction we”™re trying to change how children learn. We started with reading as a language problem and how fast you can process. You can add pixels to the way the kids hear sounds.”
Though it assists the spectrum of youth, the Gemm programs help primarily students of the elementary level because of the disparities in reading comprehension at that age.
“We have had tremendous success in our Pelham center, impacting students”™ cognitive abilities to produce gains in confidence, reading skills and grades,” said Nixon. “These outcomes persuaded us to open in new communities, like Greenwich and Scarsdale. By opening our first Connecticut learning center, we hope to empower more children to overcome learning challenges by building the cognitive skills they need for academic confidence and success.”
The K-12 Gemm service is billed as the country”™s largest provider of Fast ForWord software, a scientific learning program that the company says strengthens brain-processing efficiency for learning and reading.
The learning intervention center, with headquarters in Pelham, offers programs to change the way children learn, working with the concept of “brain plasticity,” the brain”™s natural ability to adapt and change when exercised appropriately.
The company”™s programs are said to target the root causes of children”™s learning challenges rather than tutoring the symptoms.
According to Nixon, the new Greenwich and Scarsdale centers will offer programs including Fast ForWord software, FASTT Math and other therapies.
The center will also be the first Fairfield County Brain Fitness Program provider for mature adults, designed to improve memory and other cognitive skills that have declined due to aging.
Gemm allows for children to participate in Gemm Learning”™s programs from home with or without a Gemm Learning coach.
“It”™s a commitment, it”™s very akin to going to the gym,” said Nixon. “People like us to be local.”
The program awards incentives for success in the programs including tokens, prizes and membership in Gemm City, an online social network.
In honor of the openings, Gemm will host open houses on June 7 for the Greenwich opening and on June 12 for the Scarsdale opening.
The new learning centers are located at 1380 East Putnam Avenue in Old Greenwich and 1481 Weaver St. in Scarsdale.
