The New York Liberty, a team in the Women’s National Basketball Association, will relocate its primary home court to the Westchester County Center in White Plains.
“The games will not only benefit our economy, but also provide great entertainment for the people of Westchester,” County Executive George Latimer said. “Personally I can”™t wait to head over to the County Center and cheer them on.”
Latimer said this marks the first time in more than two decades that a professional sports league will play its home games in Westchester County.
The team, owned by the The Madison Square Garden Co., previously played its home games at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. The company is in the midst of a search for a new owner of the team.
“While MSG remains committed to finding a new owner for the Liberty, the company is focused on supporting the team”™s long-term success in New York,” said New York Liberty President Isiah Thomas. “MSG has had a very positive experience at the Westchester County Center and believes it is a venue where the Liberty can extend our fan base while maintaining our roots at The Garden.”
The team will play 15 home games at the Westchester County Center, and two games at Madison Square Garden.
The Liberty will play its first home game at Westchester County Center against the Minnesota Lynx on May 25 at 7:30 p.m.
The Westchester County Center is also the home of the New York Knicks’ G League team, the Westchester Knicks. The venue has a capacity for 5,000 people.
