Murphy predicts compromise gun legislation will save lives: Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, who was a lead negotiator for the Democrats on the compromise gun control legislation agreed to by Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill yesterday, said this morning that even though the legislation would not directly restrict sales of assault rifles and eliminate loopholes regarding background checks, the increased spending proposed for security at schools and mental health services will help save lives. Murphy says that one result of creating the new mental health clinics proposed in the legislation would be a reduction in suicides using guns.
Jan. 6 committee to hear about Trump using big lie to raise millions: Today”™s hearing by the House January 6th committee was expected to present testimony by close advisors of defeated former President Donald Trump who had told Trump that he lost the election. They were expected to testify that Trump knew there was no evidence of fraud and he had lost. Testimony was expected to highlight how Trump continued to tell his big lie about the election being stolen from him and used the big lie to raise millions of dollars from supporters.
U.S. drivers pay less for gas than drivers n some other countries: A survey of global gasoline prices by GlobalPetrolPrices.com shows that despite the average per gallon price in the U.S. topping $5, U.S. drivers still are paying a comparatively low price. In Hong Kong, gasoline averages $11.21 a gallon. In Finland, it”™s $10.12 a gallon and in Greece it”™s $9.53 a gallon and in Monaco it”™s $9.16 a gallon. In Germany, gasoline is $7.88 a gallon and in England it”™s $8.09 a gallon.
Moscow court orders Wiki to remove info on war: A court in Moscow has ordered the Wikimedia Foundation, owner of the encyclopedia-like website Wikipedia, to remove information about Russia”™s invasion of Ukraine. The court ruled that truthful information about the war posted on Wikipedia is in its opinion disinformation and could risk the maintenance of public order in Russia. The court fined the Wikimedia Foundation $126,000.
Report says Russia’s income from energy exports reigns high: A report released this morning by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air says that Russia”™s income from oil, coal and gas exports remains at a record high, despite economic sanctions imposed by the West due to its invasion of Ukraine. The report says that Russia”™s earnings from the energy sources it exports are paying for its war.
Tony Awards handed out in New York City: The 2022 Tony Awards were presented last night in an event held at Radio City Music Hall. “The Lehman Trilogy” won Best Play. Best Musical was “A Strange Loop.” The award for Best Revival of a Play went to ”Take Me Out” and Best Revival of a Musical was “Company.”
