Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) opened its first showroom at Mohegan Sun, successfully circumventing Connecticut state law that has prevented it from selling its electric vehicles directly to consumers.
The Connecticut Franchise Act prevents the direct sale of automobiles from manufacturers to consumers, but Tesla refuses to make its electric vehicles available through dealership networks. The Elon Musk-run company has unsuccessfully tried to change Connecticut law, but it found a loophole by setting up its Electric Vehicle Sales & Delivery Center at Mohegan Sun, which is located on Sovereign Tribal land that is not subject to state laws.
“Opening the Tesla EV Showroom here in our Shops at Mohegan Sun, with a full sales, service and delivery operation, is the next chapter in our constant goal of creating unrivaled experiences across our 5.5 million square foot destination,” said Jeff Hamilton, president and general manager of Mohegan Sun. “This new partnership allows for a significant upgrade to our existing charging spaces as well, creating an enhanced amenity and more convenience for our guests and travelers throughout the region.”
The Tesla EV Showroom in the Shops at Mohegan Sun will be open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday and from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Visitors will be able to take demo drives of the Model 3, Y, S or X.
“Tesla’s partnership with the Mohegan Tribe and Mohegan Sun underscores their dedication to environmental sustainability,” said Rohan Patel, Tesla vice president of public policy and business development. “As Connecticut’s first sales and delivery center of its kind, we anticipate a substantial surge in zero-emission vehicle adoption. The partnership will make electric vehicles and charging infrastructure more accessible to all residents of Connecticut. We commend the Tribe and Mohegan Sun for exemplifying leadership in environmental stewardship and look forward to our work together, including the development of local talent for careers at Tesla.”
