Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced $982,640 in federal funding for roadway safety projects in New York State.
The funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Planning Grant program and will be used to develop planning and demonstration projects to improve roadway safety and help prevent deaths and serious injuries.
Three of the four projects receiving funds are in Westchester for the creation of local Comprehensive Safety Action Plans: $296,000 in Mount Vernon, $100,000 in Larchmont and $340,000 in Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow. The fourth project allocates $246,640 to Buffalo related to its Americans with Disabilities Act Transition Plan.
“Roadway safety is a top priority, and because of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, that I led to passage as majority leader, we now finally have the funding to overcome long-standing roadblocks to highway safety,” said Schumer. “This nearly $1 million federal boost will help prevent car accidents, improve traffic education, and make our roads safer for drivers across the Empire State. These grants will save lives, and I am proud to have paved the way to make it happen.”
“Investing in projects that improve roadway safety is vital to preventing future traffic tragedies in our communities,” added Gillibrand. “This funding will allow these communities to develop and implement critical safety plans to address roadway safety issues. I am proud to deliver this funding and will keep fighting to make our roads safer.”
