Amtrak service between the Croton-Harmon station and New York City is temporarily suspended due to safety concerns regarding a Manhattan building above an Amtrak tunnel.
In a statement, Amtrak shut down the service “due to safety concerns stemming from structure issues of a non-Amtrak, privately owned building above the Empire Line tracks.” Service was disrupted on Sunday after it was determined a parking garage on West 51st St. built above the Amtrak tunnel was unstable. CBS News reported that nearly 100 cars are stuck inside the garage, which has been closed by the city’s Department of Buildings since Friday while engineers determine how to stabilize its structure.
Amtrak said that passengers can have their tickets honored on Metro-North trains connecting Croton-Harmon and Grand Central Station. No estimation was given on when service would resume.
