As the nation gets ready for the Fourth of July holiday weekend, gas prices in Connecticut and New York remain above the U.S. average.
According to AAA data released this morning, the nationwide average for a gallon of regular gas is $3.54, roughly equal to the $3.57 average from one month but lower than the $4.85 average from one year ago. The record high was $5.01 set on June 14, 2022.
In Connecticut, the statewide average for a gallon of regular gas is $3.62, the highest for the New England states. The average was $3.65 one month ago and $4.63 one year ago. Fairfield County”™s $3.69 average is the highest for the state”™s counties.
In New York, the statewide average for a gallon of regular gas is $3.68, the highest for the entire Northeast region. The average was $3.70 one month ago and $4.93 one year ago. Within the Hudson Valley region, Westchester has the highest average at $3.80 and Sullivan County had the lowest at $3.63.
“Gas prices are $1.30 per gallon less this year than last, but they are still high compared to historical averages,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson. “The previous record average high price for gas on July Fourth was $4.10 in 2008, while the low was $1.39 in 2001. Yet despite currently elevated prices, drivers are not cutting back on travel this summer.”
Indeed, AAA is forecasting more than 50 million people will be traveling over the holiday, with a record 43.2 million going by car.
