For the first time in 30 years, IBM (NYSE:IBM) did not lead the nation with the greatest number of patents issued in a single year.
According to an analysis from the patent data platform IFI, IBM received 4,398 patents in 2022, but Samsung outpaced the Armonk-based company with 6,248 patents. From 1993 through 2021, IBM received more patents per year than any company.
Admittedly, 2022 was an off year for IBM. According to an analysis by Quartz, the company”™s 4,398 U.S. patents last year was a significant from the 8,681 in 2021, which itself was down from the 9,130 patents in 2020 and the 9,262 in 2019.
