ShopRite Supermarket is scheduled to open in the Midway Shopping Center in the town of Greenburgh in the summer of 2010.
“They got approvals to basically do the demolition and start construction very soon,” said town Supervisor Paul Feiner. “I think they want to be open by June. A lot of people are very excited about it.”
The ShopRite will fill a first-level, approximately 60,000-square-foot spot vacated by retailer Linens ”™n Things, which anchored the shopping plaza at the southeast corner of Central Park Avenue and Ardsley Road.
Other plaza anchors are Panera Bread Bakery-Café and Annie Sez.
“All approvals are in hand,” said Martin Deitch, a founding partner of Aries Deitch & Endelson, a Hartsdale commercial brokerage that completed the lease of approximately 47,000 square feet and 12,000 square feet of basement storage to ShopRite. “ShopRite is in for their building permits, so we”™re past all of the hurdles. The store is getting real into their finish-out.”

Feiner said ShopRite faced “almost no opposition” during the approval process.

ShopRite Supermarkets is a subsidiary of retailer-owned cooperative Wakefern Food Corp., which operates 200 ShopRite stores across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland.
The chain grosses $10.6 billion annually in retail sales.
Elisabeth Loeb, spokeswoman for Wakefern Food Corp., said the Scarsdale store “will feature a fresh bakery with artisan breads, fresh meats and seafood and a natural organic section.
“I wouldn”™t say it”™s particularly high-end, because we”™re known for our value and service,” she said. “But, it”™s definitely more of a gourmet feel with features like the artisan breads.”
Loeb said the Midway Shopping Center is “one of the oldest in the Northeast” ”“ it opened in the mid 1950s ”“ and noted other establishments like Red Lobster, CVS, Cold Stone Creamery and Pizza Hut currently populate the strip.
Longley Jones Management Corp. in Syracuse manages the property, Loeb said.
Outside of the plaza, there appears to be an influx of retail activity.
“I see signs that Central Avenue is coming back,” Feiner said. “Caffé Azzurri opened nearby, Jade Garden opened up a few months ago and there is a new Japanese restaurant near the Barnes and Noble. It”™s gradually coming.”
Also new to the Greenburgh area is a Walgreens retail store and pharmacy, which is expected to open mid-2010. It will be located at 870 Central Park Ave., the former site of Montparnasse Diner.
