White Plains made Money magazine”™s annual “Best Places to Live” ranking released Friday, placing No. 48 out of a pool of 781 U.S. cities with populations between 50,000 and 300,000.
White Plains, with a median home price of $512,000 and a population of 57,599, was noted for its proximity to New York City but also for being home to the headquarters of Heineken USA and ITT Corp.
“White Plains used to be known solely for its vast office complexes, with a downtown that had little to offer once workers filtered out at 5 p.m.,” the ranking said. “Nowadays, the streets are filled in the evening hours with folks who come to shop at the upscale Galleria, dine at the City Center or catch a show at the White Plains Center for Performing Arts.”
McKinney, Texas, finished No. 1, with a population of 140,000 and a median home price of $217,879. Fairfield, Conn., in neighboring Fairfield County finished No. 44.
