Downtown New Rochelle will return to roots of major retailers next fall with a $50 million renovation of New Roc City.
According to Cappelli Enterprises Inc., the New Roc City developer, the addition of a Target and Kohl”™s store displacing the skating rink, bowling alley and billiards hall makes economic sense.
“There is a tremendous lack of major diverse retail in the downtown ever since the New Rochelle Mall closed a few decades ago,” said Joe Apicella, executive vice president of Cappelli Enterprises.
Apicella said the retailers will serve the entire Sound Shore region and bring more shopping choices that have been missing in the city.
Apicella said Cappelli intends to break ground this fall and have the stores open in fall 2009.
“We”™re happy that Target and Kohl”™s are coming to New Rochelle,” said Craig King, New Rochelle commissioner of development. “We”™re mostly pleased that it”™s definitely going to happen. Historically, it”™s always been a mall, so it”™s returning to its roots.”
