In its latest round of stem cell research funding, the state announced $9.8 million in grants for 23 researchers.
Nearly 110 researchers applied for the grants, which were awarded by the state’s Stem Cell Research Advisory Committee. In 2006, Â state Assembly members established the committee with the goal of investing in the growing area of bioscience research. Â The committee plans to invest $100 million by 2017.
“Connecticut”™s investment in stem cells continues to position the state on the cutting edge of bioscience research,” Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said in a press release. “These grants are critical to keeping and recruiting top scientists and help make possible innovative research that serves to improve people”™s lives.”
This round, researchers based out of the University of Connecticut Health Center and Yale University won the majority of grants awarded. The researchers are working on projects ranging from bone graft substitutes to modeling chronic pain conditions.
