Westchester Children’ Association (WCA) has announced its 2023 Fall Advocacy Breakfast, titled “Youth Justice at a Crossroad: The Intersect of Data, Policy, and Advocacy,” will take place on Oct. 11 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Sleepy Hollow Hotel and Conference Center.
According to the WCA, this year’s event will focus on the intersectionality of data, policy, and advocacy, highlighting the importance of “Solutions Not Suspensions,” proposed legislation that aims to regulate suspensions to a last-resort response for student misbehavior, prioritizing alternative approaches that foster accountability and learning from mistakes. The WCA noted that students in New York lose hundreds of thousands of days in classrooms each year because of suspensions, often for normal youthful behavior – and a disproportionately high number of Black, Hispanic and LGBTQ students plus young people with disabilities are impacted.
The guest speaker at the event is Dr. Edward Fergus (pictured here), urban education and policy professor at Rutgers University, who will discuss ways to improve youth justice through a data-informed and policy-driven approach.
Admission to the event is $60 and online registration is required by Oct. 7.
