It has been two years since a mid-April nor”™easter flooded and destroyed homes and businesses throughout Westchester and the region. Yet the question remains: Are we better prepared to handle such disasters? Probably not. While many business hit hard by the floods have renovated and reopened, others have shuttered. As for homeowners affected by the storms, some have rebuilt, some relocated and others”™ fates are unknown to most of us.
Jim Killoran has seen the effects first-hand. The executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Westchester in New Rochelle has had a hand ”“ both, in fact ”“ in rebuilding homes and lives here.
Now he could use a hand.
Habitat for Humanity of Westchester is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, the not-for-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. The Westchester chapter is an organization of thousands of volunteers whose mission is “to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness throughout Westchester and to make decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and public action.”
The Business Journal checked in with Killoran to learn more about Habitat”™s goals for 2009. In an “Online” interview, he talked about the organization, upcoming fundraisers and the ever-increasing need for funding. He is seeking additional support from Westchester businesses and is always on the lookout for volunteers.
