Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo is hosting its fourth annual election for Mayor, the highest-ranking animal position that for the Bridgeport attraction.
The election will be decided by online votes cast by the general public, who are asked to make a one-dollar donation when supporting their candidate. The ballot is online at https://e.givesmart.com/events/zuI/ and voting is now on through 4:00 p.m. on Nov. 8.
“Once again, the race for Mayor of Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo is highly contested as each candidate attempts to win the support of voters,” said Zoo Director Gregg Dancho. “Unlike other elections, we encourage people to vote early, vote often, and stuff the ballot box.”
The five candidates in this year’s election are:
• Tahu the North American River Otter, whose campaign slogan is “Ready to Dive In!”
• Alli the Eastern Box Turtle, who urges voters “Don’t Box Yourself In: Vote for Alli!”
• Major Tom the Narragansett Turkey, who is running with the slogan “Let’s Talk Turkey!”
• Ella the Black and Gold Howler monkey, who promises voters that she is “Climbing to New Heights!”
• Daisy the Prairie Dog, who is in the race promising “There’s Light at the End of the Tunnel.”
This year’s candidates seem to be promising a much more energetic mayoralty than last year’s election winner, Rhubarb the Two-Toed Sloth, who got elected with the promise “If not today, tomorrow.”
