United Way of Westchester and Putnam will honor attorneys David and Mary McInnis Boies and longtime agency supporter IBM Corp. at its Gatsby-themed Spring Gala this Thursday at the Doral Arrowwood in Rye Brook.
The annual fundraising event will begin with a 6 p.m. cocktail reception, followed by dinner at 7:30 in the resort at 975 Anderson Hill Road.
David Boies, chairman of Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP, is one of the nation”™s best-known and most respected trial attorneys and was named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by Time Magazine.
His wife, Mary Boies, a former vice president of CBS Inc. and former White House adviser, is counsel to Boies, Schiller & Flexner, where she specializes in antitrust and corporate commercial litigation. She is a director of the Council on Foreign Relations. Boies founded MaryBoies Software Inc., a publisher of children”™s educational software that she later sold.
“We all know David for his skill as a litigator and Mary for her many impressive legal accomplishments, but what may be less well known is their demonstrated commitment to community, something they share with our other honoree, IBM,”™”™ said Alana Sweeny, president and CEO of the United Way of Westchester and Putnam.
The Armonk-based technology giant was among the first local corporations to launch a fundraising campaign on behalf of United Way in 1964, two years after the nonprofit agency was founded and shortly after IBM relocated its headquarters to Westchester. “From technology, volunteerism, grants to support vital programs such as homelessness prevention, literacy and aid to at-risk children, IBM has been there to provide educational and technical resources,” United Way officials said.
The United Way gala committee was co-chaired by June K. and Roger D. Blanc, Nan and Scott Hayworth and David M. Yawman.
