Northwell’s Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH) has received a five star rating, the highest possible, from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which it announced recently as part of its 2025 CMS Star Quality Rating System.
This is the second consecutive year that the hospital has earned the prestigious top rating from CMS, placing it among the top 10% of the 4,609 rated hospitals nationwide. CMS highlighted NWH’s safety of care and patient experience as key contributing factors to this achievement.
“We are thrilled to once again receive the CMS 5-star rating,” said Derek Anderson, president of Northern Westchester Hospital. “It reflects our team’s ongoing commitment to delivering superior care and achieving the best possible outcomes for every patient at Northern Westchester Hospital.”
Recognized nationally for its pulmonology and leading programs in cancer care, maternity, cardiology and orthopedics, NWH, the Magnet-designated hospital, is also internationally known for its patient-focused care. It is the first hospital in the world to receive the Gold Certification for excellence in person-centered care from Planetree International. NWH was recently recognized as a “Straight A” hospital, a designation given to hospitals that have earned the top rating from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization that grades acute-care hospitals for patient safety, in at least five consecutive cycles of the Hospital Safety Grades. Just 12% of all hospitals have earned this distinction.
CMS, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, created the five-star rating to help consumers make informed decisions about health care by evaluating hospitals based on 49 quality metrics, including mortality, safety of care, readmissions, patient experience and timely and effective care.
These ratings include seven hospitals formerly operated by Nuvance Health. Northwell completed its merger with Nuvance in May to create an integrated system with a combined $22.6 billion operating budget, over 104,000 employees, along with a network of 22,000 nurses and 13,500 providers at 28 hospitals. In total, nine Northwell hospitals received four-star or better ratings from CMS in 2025, with five earning the top five-star rating.
