After a nationwide search, Dominican University New York in Orangeburg has selected Dr. Manuel Martinez, the first lay person to lead the college since its founding by the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt 72 years ago. Prior to serving as vice president and dean of faculty at Mercy College for two years, Martinez spent 18 years at Dominican College Ohio, working his way up from an instructor in Spanish to assistant professor and eventually becoming vice president for academic affairs. He has extensive working experience on programs aimed at increasing enrollment, a challenge many colleges are facing today, and one which Dominican’s Board of Trustees are confident he can excel in, based on his extensive background as well as his understanding of the importance of balancing the benefits of a liberal arts education with workforce development.
“I am delighted that Dr. Martinez has accepted the position of president, and I feel confident leaving Dominican University in his hands,’ said Sr. Mary Hughes, who became interim president when Sr. Mary Eileen O’Brien retired in January. “Dr. Martinez is a terrific fit for this special community and I believe the university will flourish under his leadership….Since Dominican University is a Hispanic Serving Institution, it is also wonderful that Dr. Martinez understands the culture of many of our students and can communicate with their families in their native language.” Hughes will remain as interim president until July 15 and expects the transition will be a seamless one.
