Trinity Spiritual Center at Trinity Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 651 Pequot Ave., Southport, Connecticut, will host an in-person conversation and live stream event with acclaimed author and teacher Mirabai Starr on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m. This special event is open to all members of the community regardless of religious affiliation.
Starr will lead a lively, interactive discussion demonstrating to audience members how to discover the extraordinary in our everyday lives. She will show how everyone can find meaning and wonder, even in the most mundane moments of our lives.
Starr will share experiences of her own life journey, as well as insights from spiritual teachers across the centuries, offering ancient and contemporary practices that will help us wake up to the daily miraculous. In her new book “Ordinary Mysticism,” Starr makes clear how we can all experience the sacred in everyday events: weeding our gardens, an evening walk with a friend, our kitchen table surrounded by family, indeed even in our shortcomings, including the mess that we create of our lives.
She contends that the spiritual dimension of our lives is always available to us. What we need to do is learn how to tap into an inherent way of knowing that we all possess. This is the way of the mystic.
A professor of philosophy and world religions at the University of New Mexico-Taos for 20 years, Starr travels the world sharing her wisdom on contemplative living, writing as a spiritual practice, and the transformational power of grief and loss. She has authored over a dozen books and has received critical acclaim for her revolutionary contemporary translations of the mystics John of the Cross, Teresa of Ávila, and Julian of Norwich. In 2020, she was honored on Watkins’ list of the “100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People.”
“Trinity Spiritual Center is delighted that Mirabai will join us in Southport to share her insights on how our daily lives can lead us into a deeper understanding of the mysteries of life,” said Mark Grayson, founding director. “Drawing on her wealth of knowledge of ancient wisdom traditions, she has created a set of practices from which we can all benefit.”
Copies of her book will be on sale at the in-person event. An author signing will follow.
