Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville was ranked the 59th-best liberal arts college in U.S. News and World Report”™s 2015 Best Colleges list published Tuesday.
The college had been unranked by the publication since 2005, according to The Washington Post, because it did not use ACT and SAT scores in admissions, which meant its students’ scores could not be used in comparison with those of other colleges. Several years ago, the Post said, Sarah Lawrence made such testing optional.
The top spot on the list went to Williams College in Massachusetts, which has remained No. 1 for 12 years. Rounding out the top five were Amherst College, Swarthmore College, Wellesley College and Bowdoin College.
SUNY Purchase finished No. 171, the only other Westchester County college that made the ranking.
It was the 30th year of the Best Colleges ranking, which was culled from nearly 1,800 schools in the country. For the first time in its history, the ranking includes the U.S. Department of Education’s three-year loan default rates ”“ a meter for tracking how recent graduates are handling their student debt.
“How to plan and pay for college is a challenge parents around the country face each year,” said Anita Narayan, education editor. “Our paying for college resources and tips are designed to help families more easily navigate this complex process, from saving for college and understanding financial aid options to paying off student loans.”
The publication also released its list of best universities in the nation, with Princeton University coming in at No. 1.
