Hubbell Inc., the Shelton-headquartered manufacturer of quality electrical and electronic products, has announced that it will close its Newtown manufacturing facility over the next six months.
The shutdown of the Newtown plant, which employs approximately 140 employees, is the second Fairfield County facility that Hubbell is closing. Earlier this month, it announced plans to shutter its Bethel operations. Most of the operations from the Newtown location will be moved to a Hubbell facility in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, with the rest being dispersed among third-party contractors.
The Newtown location opened in 1960 and focuses on commercial and industrial wiring device manufacturing and operations activities. In a statement issued by the company, Hubbell said the Fairfield County closings were “part of an ongoing, years-long operational efficiency initiative,” but added the company will retain a Connecticut presence.
“Connecticut is our home,” according to the statement. “In addition to our corporate headquarters in Shelton and other smaller sites in Winsted and Mystic, we have just invested in a new facility in Avon for our iDevices brand, which focuses on smart technologies, a growing focus for our company. All told, these facilities represent more than 650 jobs.”
“Our primary focus at this time is on supporting our employees through this transition. The company will not be making any public comments beyond this statement.”
