The city of Yonkers is paying tribute this week to select businesses that create specialty items in the city.
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano on Monday announced the start of “Proudly Made in Yonkers Week” at an appearance at Yonkers Brewing Co., the craft brewery that opened this year at 92 Main St. in the former city trolley barn on the downtown waterfront. City officials are handing out Proudly Made in Yonkers stickers for business owners to display in their storefront windows.
Starting with Yonkers Brewing Co., seven businesses are being highlighted in the course of the week at www.yonkersny.gov/made with behind-the-scenes video and photos showing how their products are made and manufactured.
Featured business include J B & Son, an Italian food market at 564 Mile Square Road; San Signs and Awnings at 925 Saw Mill River Road; Orza Bakery, a 107-year-old bread-making shop at 257 New Main St.; Pascal Coffee Roasters Inc. at 960 Nepperhan Ave.; POP Displays, a maker of retail point-of-purchase display signs at 555 Tuckahoe Road, and Greyston Bakery, the for-profit social enterprise of the nonprofit Greyston Foundation that produces 30,000 pounds of brownies and cookies daily at its 104 Alexander St. plant.
“Yonkers is a big city but a small town; we”™ve welcomed high-tech companies and new development to our growing city but still cherish the corner store that”™s been around for generations,” Spano said when announcing the launch of Proudly Made in Yonkers Week. “We”™re proud to say that Yonkers is the birthplace of specialty items and unique products sold around the world.”
